WORLD PAIRS FINAL

POLAND were highly fancied for this meeting and rode to 5 maximums from their 5 races to lift the title.  RAFAL ARANOWSKI won 5 from 5, dropping his only points after an exclusion against Canada, with almost perfect support from JERZY WIECZOREK, who also only dropped points against the Canadian duo.

CANADA took 2nd in the meeting and very deservedly so with both DOUG MONAGHAN AND JACKSON ROY scoring 12 points towards their total, their 5-1 over eventual winners Poland in heat 12 raising hopes of going all the way but they just couldn't match the consistency of the Poles and had to settle for silver medals.  The bookies made DENMARK slight favourites before the meeting but they started and finished by conceding maximums and had to settle for 3rd overall as STEEN ERIKSEN couldn't quite give the support he wanted to JENS ISAKSEN (12+1).

New Zealand and Sweden were both close to a rostrum finish but missed out on medals for different reasons.  New Zealand suffered a pointless heat against the Poles when both their riders suffered an exclusion with Chong then having bike problems in the next heat and were unlucky to leave without medals, particularly the impressive Laing.  For the Swedes Grafstrom showed flashes but they didn't move up the standings until reserve Olsson replaced out of form Olle Nyman and by then it was too late to catch the leaders.  Wales disappointed, ending in 6th, whilst Bulgaria were the pre-meeting outsiders but will have been wanting to score more than the 9 points they managed.
